The Philosophy of Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol, I learned about him from my high school visual art class. I used to think his art was pretentious, which is ironic as he is the leading figure for the Pop Art movement. Pretentious is defined as attempting to impress others by acting as though you or something is more important than it actually is, or more intelligent or insightful than it actually is.
However, the more i learn about his art, his pop art movement and his ideology, i became a fan of Andy Warhol. He was not even trying to be the pop art movement, HE is the pop art movement himself. He is as real as a any human can be. I read his book " The philosophy of Andy Warhol" two times and each time I learned something new.
I would like to share few of my favourite quotes from his book, even though the book itself is a quotable each single page.
Love (Puberty)
The moment I decided I'd rather be alone and not have anyone telling me their problems, everybody I'd never ever seen before in my life started running after me to tell me things I'd just decided I didn't think it was a good idea to hear about. As soon as I became a loner in my own mind, that's when I got what you might call a "following."- As soon as you stop wanting something you get it. P.23
Love (Senility)
The symptom of love is when someone of the chemicals inside you go bad. So there must be something in love because your chemicals do tell you something. P.47
When you want to be like something, it means you really love it. When you want to be like a rock, you really love that rock. P.53
People's fantasy are what give them problems. If you didn't have fantasies you wouldn't have problems because you'd just take whatever was there. But then you wouldn't have romance, because romance is finding your fantasy in people who don't have it. A friend of mind always says "women love me for the man I'm not." P.55
To think about the love problem of people you know is really strange, because their love problems are so different from their life problems. P.56
Beauty
Sometimes people having nervous breakdown problems can look very beautiful because they have that fragile some-thing to the way they move or walk. They put out a mood that makes them more beautiful. P. 64
I usually accept people on the basis of their self-images, because their self-images have more to do with the way they think than their objective-images do. Maybe she's six hundred pounds, who knows. If she doesn't care, I don't. P.69
Some people, even intelligent people, say that violence can be beautiful. I can't understand that, because beautiful is some moments, and for me those moments are never violent. - P.70
Fame
I think "aura" is something that only somebody else can see, and they only see as much of it as they want to. It's all in the other person's eyes. You can only see an aura on people you don't know very well or don't know at all. P.77
I never fall apart because i never fall together. P.81
Every professional performer I've ever seen always does exactly same thing at exactly the same moment in every show they do. They know when the audience is going to laugh and when its going to get really interested. What i like are things that are different every time. That's why i like amateur performers and bad performers- you can never tell what they'll do next. P.82
When you meet someone you never dreamed you'd meet, you're taken by surprise, so you haven't made up at any fantasies and you're not let down. P.83
Work
People sometimes say that the way things happens in the movies is unreal, but actually it's the way things happen to you in life that's unreal. The movies make emotions look so strong and real, whereas when things really do happen to you, it's like watching television-you don't feel anything. P.91
